The Civil Rights Committee, chaired by Mari Newman, will host a CLE discussion on "Litigating ADA and Rehabilitation Act Claims on Behalf of Prisoners" by Amy Robertson from the Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center. This meeting takes place on Friday, November 17 at noon at Killmer Lane & Newman, 1543 Champa Street, Suite 400 in Denver.
Over 50% of prisoners nationwide have mental health problems, and over 34% have one or more physical or cognitive impairments. The Supreme Court has held that the Americans with Disabilities Act applies in prison, but what does that mean as a practical matter? This presentation will provide a basic introduction to Title II of the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act, and discuss the specific ways these statutes apply to the programs, activities, and facilities of a prison.
